Client

The Academic Woman

Year

May 2020 – November 2021

Creation and delivery of The Academic Woman brand, magazine and online presence.

OBJECTIVE

The client wanted to create a quarterly magazine and community for women working or aspiring to work in academia. This project was in the conception stage when Aphra was approached.

Aphra saw a clear affinity between the client’s mission and Aphra’s own social values around supporting and championing women in the workplace.

Although the client had a clear vision of creating a quarterly magazine, they had no previous experience in this area. Aphra offered strategic support, taking the client through all the necessary steps involved in planning and producing a high-quality publication ready for public sale.

Strategy

Consult

Aphra’s Copywriter worked with the client to instil a knowledge base about creating a publication. This included demonstrating to the client how to: make a flat plan, select strong stories, structure stories, make choices on copy length, and approach design thinking. With this fundamental support, the client was able to work with Aphra on creating a strategic plan for the project, including diverse income generation streams.

Create

Aphra’s Senior Designer created a logo which fully reflected the personality and breadth of work of the brand, encompassing design elements such as women, community, growth, and academia. We produced brand guidelines as well as a website, which included designated space for podcasts, community, subscriptions, and a product page.

Aphra then designed bespoke products such as a branded pin, both to diversify income streams and to generate a sense of community and belonging.

We worked with the client to help deliver a flat plan for the magazine followed by creating a clear process for design, copyediting, page setting and proofreading future issues.

Aphra produced a social media content plan, including PPC, and managed the social media accounts during the launch.

Grow

We worked with the client to launch the publication and website, manage social media accounts, and grow the Academic Woman community. Aphra actively worked with printers to enhance the quality of publication through paper and ink quality and were integral in ensuring the integrity of the brand.

  • Social value – championing women in academia.

  • In partnership with Aphra, the client demonstrated new possibilities and ways of working to a sector that is often budget restrained.

  • This Academic Woman continues to use the original brand setup and guidelines that Aphra created.
